Description

The Fitting, Boiler, and Smithy Shops are two-storey and single-storey buildings that date from the 19th century. The Fitting Shop features a gabled end with a clock at the apex and has a green rubble facade with pale dressings. It includes four-pane sash windows set under segmental voussoir heads, a gabled porch with brackets supporting the bargeboards over the doorway, and a roof covered with modern corrugated sheeting and projecting eaves. The short return flanks have paired windows and dormer treatment on the upper floor. At the rear, there is a long single-storey range with fixed lights beneath arched heads and a two-storey inner end on the northeast side.

The Boiler Shop has a tall refronted centre gable with horizontal glazing above a modern shuttered entrance. The brick flank elevations feature arched clerestorey windows and rubble pilasters, topped with a modern corrugated roof. To the left, the Smithy has a lower rubble gable with a single arched window and a modern corrugated roof.

The main building faces Victoria Road and has a centre gablet with a blocked oculus and irregular dark voussoirs on the ground floor arches, which generally have fixed lights. The interiors of the buildings are interconnected. The Boiler Shop has brick pilastered walls with corbelled out steel girders that support a modern travelling crane, and the roofs are open work timber.
