Description
The building complex at Marine Yard includes a tall single-storey sawmill building dating from the 19th century, constructed of grey-green rubble with pale dressings and topped with a modern corrugated roof. The southwest gable features two bays with a central pilaster and inclined eaves bands, along with blocked arch openings on two levels. The main flank has five bays with irregular arched openings and fixed small-pane metal lights, and there is a small lean-to extension. The northeast gable is blind, with modern timber doors replacing the original arched openings.
To the rear, there is a taller cross range known as the old boiler shop, which has similar external pilaster and eaves band treatments. It features tall ground floor arched windows with fixed lights and a slate roof that includes an external chimney through the eaves facing the Smithy. A one-storey lean-to extension runs along the full length of the northeast face.
Additionally, there is a one-storey stores building, formerly the Smithy, which has a hipped slate roof with a blanked-off lantern or ventilator. The building has brick heads to arched ground floor windows with fixed small-pane metal lights, as well as later broad openings with metal lintels. The sawmill retains a belt-driven saw on rails made by T Robinson of Rochdale. Inside the old boiler shop, there is a massive arch with wooden doors leading to the Boiler Shop, which is at right angles to it. The old boiler shop also retains brick pilasters with corbelled-out rails for the original travelling crane with a ratchet mechanism. The stores interior features brick pilasters and arches to the inner gable that formerly linked to the Boiler Shop, along with side arches for drive belts and open timber roofs.
