The Captains Table

The Captains Table is a three-storey building facing Market Square, featuring four windows with sash glazing, each having a single large pane. The front elevation, which faces the square, is roughcast, while the roof has a bituminous coating on the left side and slate on the right, complemented by large rectangular chimneys. The entrance includes a doorcase with a cornice and panelled soffits, leading to a panelled door. To the right, there is a small dormer with small pane glazing and an advanced two-storey wing that is crenellated, featuring a sash window on the first floor and a doorway with a restaurant front.

The rear elevation, facing east, was rebuilt in the late 19th century and is rendered with exposed stone dressings, although a tower remains in exposed stone. The ground drops steeply down to Victoria Road, where the building has four storeys with two advanced bays featuring stepped gables with finials. The windows are mullioned, with two lights on the top floor and three lights on the others. To the right, there is a gable with a finial and a four-light mullioned window spanning two floors, beneath which is an advanced crenellated block that is two storeys high, featuring a segmental-headed doorway to the left. To the right of this block is an engaged cylindrical tower built on the site of a Roman tower. The tower is crenellated and has two-light mullioned windows on the top floor, with four-light mullioned and transomed windows on the lower floors.

The south gable end is stepped and has small windows, while the north gable, which faces the churchyard, incorporates a Roman wall and features a mullioned and transomed window with cusped heads.
