Description

The Market Hall is a substantial public building, storeyed at the downhill end, constructed from local green shaley rubble with buff sandstone dressings and slate roofs. Its Jacobethan frontage is notable for its mullion and transom windows and shaped gables, with the central bay being taller, more advanced, and richly detailed. The central gable features a rounded apex with a facetted keystone, while the flanking gables display an ogee treatment. The plinth, quoins, gable parapets, and window surrounds contribute to a mid-19th century facade of considerable interest.

The three-window central bay includes a clock face set within an inscribed roundel, and the windows feature Robert Smythson type facetted and buttoned panels. The central window has a projecting stone architrave adorned with weathered Welsh and English inscriptions and coats of arms at the top. The main entrance is tripartite, with chamfered semicircular arches, keystones, and imposts, along with original wrought iron gates dated 1855, made by Ellis Williams Black Bridge Foundry in Holyhead. The outer bays have cross-frame windows and similar arched doorways.

On the right side, which has been reroofed, there is a small-pane window with chamfered jambs and a stone bracketed base that once supported a balcony, along with a cross-frame window above a modern doorway and two blocked windows that retain their surrounds. A fine semicircular arched doorway mirrors those on the front. The top (rear) features three gables with simple roundels. The left side has red brick chimneys that have been cut down, but otherwise retains similar details, including an arched doorway towards the top end.

The Market Hall is located in the town centre on a sloping site, set back and above the street behind single-storey shops, with side and rear elevations facing Summer Hill and Trearddur Square. Inside, it retains an iron staircase with a scrolled newel and straight balusters.
