Description

Hyfrydle Chapel, built in the 19th century, features cement rendered elevations with the front painted, shallow cement architraves around doors and windows, and slate roofs. The gabled entrance front faces the road and includes arcaded panelling in the gable apex, a central group of three round-arched windows, and a glory arch above. The outer bays are advanced and have a balustraded parapet, with paired round-arched windows on the first floor and a pair of square-headed windows on the ground floor. There are two pedimented shallow porches with round-arched entrance doorways and panelled two-leaf doors, as well as three windows between the porches. The side elevations consist of five bays, featuring round arches for the upper windows and square heads for the ground floor, with horned sash glazing that includes marginal bars.

At the rear, there is a two-storey schoolroom block attached at right angles. The gable facing Ucheldre Chapel displays the chapel name in the apex and has three windows on each floor, along with five windows on the side elevation.

Inside, the chapel has a good interior with pine box pews. A balcony surrounds three sides, supported by classical fluted Corinthian columns, and features inlaid panels on the balcony front with pine seating. The flat ceiling is adorned with an elaborate central plaster rose surrounded by a ring of smaller roses, and there is panelling with ribs and additional roses. The windows have moulded architraves. A fine set fawr enclosure includes steps with turned newels and balusters, some of which are inlaid, leading up to the pulpit, which has birdseye maple panelling and small columns. Behind the set fawr, there is an organ pipe case with a console at ground level in front of it. The rear block contains a first-floor schoolroom and ground-floor service rooms.
