East House, Smithy Houses, Peaston

East House is an 18th century smithy that includes two later smithy houses, all situated in a prominent continuous row at a bend in the road. The building is constructed of rubble with squared stone dressings and harl pointing, though there are cement repairs to the openings of the smithy houses.

The smithy itself is in poor condition and is a single-storey structure with three bays. It has a central door flanked by windows, with additional windows and a door at the rear. The gables are steeply pitched.

Inside the smithy, there is a forge located in the outer gable, complete with a working hearth. The windows are fitted with plate glass glazing in sash and case style, and there is a boarded door. The roof features brick coped skews and a brick stack, covered with red pantiles that include three sections of clear glazing tiles.

The smithy houses are set back slightly from the smithy and are two-storey buildings with a first floor that breaks the eaves. They have four bays, with fanlit, boarded doors and relieving arches over the central bays, along with windows in the outer bays. Gabled dormerheads break the eaves above the outer bays and between those in the center, with the outer dormerheads featuring stone coping. The return gable is blank, and there are openings at the rear.

The windows in the smithy houses include 12-pane and 4-pane sash and case styles. The skews have stone coping, and the stacks are harled. The roofs are covered with grey slates.
