Description

The Stables at Carreglwyd is a lofted stable range built in the 19th century, featuring a single-storey range set at right angles to the rear, creating a T-shaped plan. The main elevation faces southwest towards the main house and consists of a five-window arrangement, including a central gabled entrance and steps leading up to the loft at the northwest end. The structure is made of rubble masonry with brick heads above the openings and has a slate roof with projecting verges at the front. The central gable features projecting eaves adorned with decorative bargeboards and a hexagonal cupola.

The front windows are five-light, arranged in a 2 over 3 configuration, with slate sills and slightly cambered brick heads. The gable includes a four-light mullioned window, with a brick relieving arch above it that contains a 'Royal' insurance plaque in the tympanum. At ground level, there is a wide entrance with a slightly cambered brick head that leads to a cobbled yard, with doors to stable blocks on either side and stone steps leading to a rear doorway. A pitching hole with a boarded door is located at the southeast return, and there are top-hung casement windows at the rear.

The single-storey range at the back has a single gable stack on the southwest side and is connected to the main stable range by a lean-to roof over the space in between. This section has been altered in the 20th century, with the doorway on the southwest widened, and it is now used for storage. Additional doorways can be found at the northeast end and at the northeast return, with small casement lights at the rear, some of which are boarded. The building now features a modern A-frame truss.
