Description

The lofted stable range was built in the 18th century and is situated at right angles to the service wing of Plas Llanddyfnan, linked by an archway and single bay at the left end of the range. The building is constructed of rubble masonry, with the east and north faces rendered. It features a hipped slate roof with a rendered ridge stack at the left end, incorporating dripstones and capping.

The asymmetrical design incorporates a wide, segmentally arched cartbay entrance offset to the right (north) end, with the roofline raised above as a pyramidal roof topped by a timber cupola. To the right of the cartbay is a single stable unit of two bays. To the left is a mirrored pair of two-bay stable units, complemented by the linking single bay unit and arch at the far left end. The stable to the right has a modern part-glazed door on the left and a three-light window over a hit-and-miss ventilator on the right. The first floor has louvred windows. The doors to the left are boarded, with mixed windows. The right-hand stable has a six-pane light above a panelled shutter on the ground floor, with a blocked light above and a four-pane light over the doorway. The left-hand stable has a small paned horizontally sliding sash window above the door, while the ground-floor window is a twelve-pane sash with a four-pane light over, and a similar light over the doorway in the single unit at the left end. Above the cartbay entrance is a datestone, above which is a four-pane arched light and, directly above that, a circular window.

The right (north) return is roughcast rendered, comprising a three-bay range, with two bays offset to the right (the left-hand bay of which has a datestone above the doorway). The doors are stable doors with boarding; loft openings are also boarded.

The south end of the north range is also roughcast rendered and has one ground-floor and one loft window, both boarded. The south return of the north range extends to meet the rear of the stable range, both of which are of exposed rubble masonry. The cartbay includes an external stone stair to the rear, leading up to a boarded door on the right and a boarded window on the upper floor to its left. To the right of this is the rear of the paired stables and single unit; there’s a single doorway to the left of the stack and a pitching hole or loft doorway to its left. There are three loft windows along the range, set directly under the eaves, and a small ground-floor window cut in at the right (south) end.

The interior was not inspected during the survey.
