Description

Bodeilio is an early 17th century gentry house. The main front faces a walled garden to the southwest and features a two-storey, three-window layout, including a storeyed porch that is offset to the right. At the rear, there is a single-storey service wing that was formerly a dairy. The building is constructed from limestone and grit rubble masonry, with large quoins. It has a slate roof with stone coping, gable stacks with capping, and a tall rendered stack on the porch gable that has hollow chamfered capping. The porch entrance features an arched doorway with double roll-moulded jambs and broach stops. Above the first-floor window, there is a moulded label and an inscribed stone that shows the dates 1602 and 1618 along with the initials I. O. The windows in the flanking bays have been replaced with modern casements.

The original ground plan has been altered due to the addition of a later partition, although the staircase remains in its original position. The layout likely included a passage with the staircase at one end and a room on either side. Cased beams and mortices under the main beam of the kitchen near the north end indicate that this area was likely used as a larder. There are massive chamfered bressumers over large inglenook fireplaces in both the kitchen and sitting room. The first floor retains its original layout with a central hallway and rooms on either side, including one above the porch that formerly had a fireplace in the southeast corner. Original panels of the passage remain, while the rooms were subdivided in the 19th century. The staircase window is located at the half landing, and there are wide-boarded doors as well as doors with six sunk panels.
