Description

Marian is a late 16th century gentry house. The original structure has a three-window layout, is two storeys high with attics, and is built in a rectangular shape. The main facade faces south, featuring a 17th century gabled wing that extends at the eastern end, along with a blocked doorway to the west. The building is constructed from limestone rubble masonry and has a renewed slate roof with raised eaves. A massive double-shafted stack made of gritstone ashlar is topped with a single moulded gritstone capping that has a quarter-round moulding typical of late Tudor design. There is also a modern porch added to the entrance.

On the northern elevation, the eastern wing has a gabled end with a blocked square-headed doorway and a gable stack that features a moulded capping of 17th century style. The western end has been partially rebuilt. While most windows and doors are modern, some still retain their original lintels and jambs.

Marian is classified as an early 'Group A' type, characterized as a cross passage house with a lateral chimney. Much of the internal detail has been lost, but in the older section of the house, there is a segmental chamfered arch over the fireplace in the western room, along with stop-chamfered beams with moulded stops in the ground floor rooms. The eastern room also has original chamfered joists and ceiling beams, as well as chamfered edges on the window reveals and the head of the doorway. In the bedrooms above, there are additional chamfered beams, one featuring moulded stops. A re-set 16th century fireplace is located in the 17th century eastern wing; it has a stone Tudor arch with moulded jambs and plain spandrels, which have been repositioned to create a narrower opening. Above this opening is an ogee-moulded stone ledge of 17th century character.
