Description

This building is a cottage that was formerly several dwellings, arranged in two right-angled sections surrounding a cobbled yard at the back. It is single-storey and features modern roughcast over stone with a Ffestiniog slate roof, which has replaced an old grouted slate roof. The earliest section, aligned southwest to northeast, has one axial stack and two squat gable end stacks. It consists of four single units, each with a window beneath the eaves, and doorways in the first and third units from the left. All openings are modern, with casement windows replacing earlier sash windows. One 8-pane fixed light window remains on the rear elevation.

The section parallel to the street has two squat axial stacks and modern windows, mostly small, with one in an enlarged opening. The rear elevation also has modern windows, possibly in earlier openings, and two doorways that may indicate a previous orientation away from the road and independent access to individual units. There is a flat-roofed extension that was added around 1970.

The unusual layout consists of two ranges, each with four single-plan units. The gable end stacks serve the outer units in the southwest to northeast range, while an axial stack is shared between the two central units. Where fireplaces are exposed, they are small with simple timber bressumers and stepped chimney breasts. The roof trusses in each room are slight A-frames with jointed collars, originating below wall-plate level and supporting flat through purlins. The range at right angles features back-to-back fireplaces in axial stacks that are offset, and the roof trusses are of a somewhat later type, springing from wall-plate level.
