Description
The White Bridge, also known as the Bacule railway bridge, is a railway bridge featuring five fixed spans and one roller lift span. It is supported by fourteen iron cylinders, which are weighted with concrete and braced by lattice girders. The bridge is decorated with cast-iron moulded capitals and carries a steel superstructure made up of cross-girders and rail-bearers that rest on bearing girders. The parapet consists of solid panels topped with lattice-work, and three-sided cast-iron pilasters define the bays of each span. The abutments and the sub-structure of the lifting mechanism are made of brick.
The westernmost lifting span is a balanced cantilever, supported on steel-plate bearing girders and two sets of cylinders. The lattice girders curve down to align with the parapet of the main bridge. Steel-plate cross girders and rail bearers are arranged such that the cross girders alternate projections to support the outriggers of the main girders. The moving span is operated by a gearing system mounted on trestles on cantilevers on either side of the bridge. A curved rack is attached to the outer face of the main girders, driven by pinions that are powered by wheels. Although these operational details remain intact, the small power house that once housed the electric motor on the south side of the bridge is now in a state of disrepair.
