Description
6 Royal Terrace in Linlithgow is a classical villa designed by John Lauder in 1829. This two-storey, three-bay building features a rectangular plan and is constructed from cream sandstone rubble, which is squared and coursed on the north elevation. It has base and eaves courses, as well as a cornice.
The north elevation, which serves as the entrance, has a slightly advanced pedimented bay at the center. The entrance door is set within a round-arched panel and features a pilastered tripartite doorcase, a semi-circular umbrella fanlight, and a panelled door flanked by blind windows that have been painted over. Above is an oval oculus. The outer bays contain tall windows on the ground floor and smaller windows on the first floor.
The south elevation, or rear, has three bays with the center bay slightly advanced. It includes a modern conservatory extension at the center with a 1940s window above, and regular fenestration in the flanking bays. The ground floor features 12-pane sash and case windows, while the first floor has 8-pane windows. The roof is covered with grey slate and has a piended design, with sandstone end stacks that have moulded cans and two rooflights at the rear.
Inside, there is a central two-storey hall with a winding stair that has decorative iron balusters. To the left on the ground floor, there is a room with a sideboard recess flanked by Ionic columns, and an ornate cast-iron grate by Carron with a marble chimneypiece.
Additionally, there are single-storey sandstone rubble outbuildings and backing garden walls with a pantiled roof. An original pump is located to the left of the conservatory.
