Sundial, Cayzer Family Private Cemetery, Gartmore

The Gartmore sundial is a complete sandstone obelisk sundial from the 17th century, located in the Cayzer Family Private Cemetery behind Gartmore Church. Obelisk sundials are unique to Scotland, and this sundial is one of only 25 complete examples still in existence, making it nationally significant. Originally situated in the forecourt of Gartmore House, it was relocated to its current position in the early 1960s.

Standing approximately 8 feet high, the sundial is set on a square plinth with an octagonal stone base. It features a square shaft with four panels and an octagonal collar. Uniquely, all eight faces of the collar have bowl-shaped sinkings. The pointed boss, or polyhedron, includes corner cup-hollows and dials on both the upper and lower surfaces. The tapering finial has five panels and is topped with a pineapple finial. The sundial contains a total of 56 dials, some of which have metal gnomons, but it bears no inscription or date.
