Description
Gartmore Village Gate, built in 1790 by an unknown architect, is located at the northeast end of Main Street in Gartmore and provides access to the Gartmore estate. The gate features a central semi-circular arch, flanked by trefoil piers topped with a crenellated parapet. It is also flanked by slim towers with quatrefoil pier angles, and there are trefoil-headed side gates with quatrefoils above. The curved side screen walls end in quatrefoil piers. The structure is made of painted roughcast with ashlar dressings. The flanking towers still have their gothic wrought iron gates, although the central arch has lost its gates, as seen in an early postcard. This gate is a well-preserved example of an estate entrance that has remained relatively unaltered. It dates from the later 18th century, a time when the Graham family of Gartmore made several improvements to their house and grounds and developed the planned estate village of Gartmore.
