Description
The former schoolroom on Freuchan Lane in Gartmore is possibly an early 18th-century building. It is a single-storey structure with thick random rubble walls and a slightly battered base. Local residents believe it served as a schoolroom for the village before the current school was established in the mid-1840s. The building is located at the end of the garden of Briar Cottage and faces the lane leading to Freuchan. In 1719, the Scottish Society for the Propagation of Christian Knowledge opened a school in Gartmore, and there is local belief that this building was its location. It holds early historical significance as the first school in the planned estate village of Gartmore, developed by the Grahams of Gartmore House in the 18th century.
The southwest elevation faces Freuchan Lane and features a timber boarded door on the right with a concrete lintel. There is a single 6-pane timber window in the center of the southeast (garden) elevation, with two rooflights above. The northwest and southeast elevations have various blocked window openings, while the northeast gable is blank. The slate roof is piended to the southwest and pitched to the northeast, suggesting it was originally gabled at both ends. The timber roof joists were replaced around 1900, and the roof was re-slated in the 1980s, during which time the gablehead stack on the northeast gable was removed. Inside, there is an earth floor and a fireplace with a large stone lintel.
