Description
Culbowie Cottage, located on Main Street, Gartmore, is a single-storey, three-bay cottage dating back to the later 18th century, according to the present owner. It has a gabled extension to the rear, creating an L-shaped plan. The cottage is set slightly back from the street and is accompanied by a low rubble boundary wall with chamfered ashlar copes. Decorative painted cast-iron gatepiers and a gate are part of the frontage. Culbowie Cottage was built as part of the planned estate village of Gartmore, designed by Nicol Graham and his descendants in the 18th century. Originally thatched, it stands as a largely unaltered example of a cottage within the planned village, contributing to the streetscape.
The principal, northwest-facing elevation has a central door flanked by single windows, presenting a near-symmetrical appearance. The rear, southeast-facing elevation incorporates a single-storey gabled extension to the left, visible on the first edition Ordnance Survey map from 1859-64, and a smaller 20th-century addition to the right. The northeast side elevation is blank, while the southwest side elevation contains two single windows, serving both the main body of the cottage and the rear gabled extension. The stonework on the southwest gable suggests the cottage was once adjoined to another single-storey building. This is confirmed by the first edition Ordnance Survey map, which shows a cottage connected to Culbowie on the southwest side, in the plot now occupied by Terreran (built in the later 19th century and not listed).
The boundary wall along the northwest (street) elevation was formerly topped with railings, of which only the stumps remain.
Inside, the cottage has been modernized. It retains its original rectangular plan, featuring a central hall with a bedroom to the left and a sitting room to the right. Original timber working shutters are present in the bedroom, and cornicing is visible in the hall.
The cottage is constructed from whitewashed random rubble with stone margins around the openings. It has a modern timber panelled front door and timber sash and case windows on the front elevation. Various modern windows and small rooflights are found on the rear. The pitched roof is covered with graded grey slates, and there is a single brick coped gablehead stack with a circular clay can on the southwest gable.
