Description
The sundial at Lochgoilhead is a 17th century sandstone obelisk located in the garden of The Cottage, on land that was once common village ground at the head of Loch Goil. It is believed to have been moved several times, with its original location now unknown, but it has been in its current position since around 1870. This sundial is a notable example of the distinctive style of 17th century sundial design.
The sundial features a square three-stepped plinth and is surrounded by circular metal railings. The square shaft is divided into five square panels on each face, each containing a sunken geometrical shape, including hearts, hemispheres, saltires, and other geometric designs. Some panels still have stubs of broken metal gnomons. On the north side of the shaft, the top panel displays the initials D / HM, the middle panel shows the initials S / C (C), and the lowest panel is marked with the date 1626, which appears to have been recut in the 19th century. It is believed that the original date was 1696, as the sundial closely resembles another dated 1695 at Asknish House. Atop the shaft is a multi-facetted head featuring sunken hemispheres and triangles on the oblique faces, with the obelisk above. Both the head and the obelisk have several broken gnomons, some of which are surrounded by finely incised dials that are now almost entirely illegible.
