Description
The Macgregor Murray Mausoleum, built around 1820, is a three-bay structure featuring crow-stepped gables and a crypt at the rear, situated on a slope. The main façade faces north and includes a two-leaf timber panelled door set within a pointed-arch architrave, with a two-light cusped window above it. The mausoleum is supported by substantial buttresses with triangular-capped shoulders at the corners and between the bays. The side elevations have blind pointed-arch windows with uncarved shields beneath them, while the south gable has a small bipartite window and timber-boarded doors leading to the crypt. This mausoleum is a well-preserved example of early 19th-century architecture, located prominently in the centre of Auchtubh.
Inside, the mausoleum features arched stone recesses arranged in tiers of three along the side walls and one at the end wall. Some of these recesses have been plastered over and are marked with memorial stones. The earliest memorial dates back to 1822 and is adorned with cherub heads.
The mausoleum is constructed of random rubble with polished ashlar dressings and has a stone-slabbed roof. Surrounding the mausoleum is a curved random rubble boundary wall with a central entrance to the north, flanked by square ashlar gatepiers topped with domed rubble caps. The entrance features two-leaf, spear-headed, cast-iron gates.
