Description
Ardachaidh is a two-storey, irregular-plan gabled house built around 1870, located in the centre of Balquhidder. It features deep, bracketed eaves, a swept-roof porch, and log-effect stonework. The house was constructed as part of village improvements initiated by the local landowner, David Carnegie, and is designed in a style that complements the nearby church and school.
The house has a roughly L-shaped plan with gables facing north and west. The entrance is on the north elevation, where a swept-roof porch occupies the re-entrant angle. Flanking the front door are windows, and on the ground floor of the north gable, there is a projecting bay window with a lean-to roof. The land slopes down to the south, and at the southeast corner, there is a slightly lower gabled wing that projects forward at the south gable.
Inside, there is a curved timber staircase featuring barley-twist iron balusters and a mahogany handrail. The materials used include a half-glazed timber panelled front door, non-traditional tilting timber windows, coursed sandstone with a rounded surface for a log effect, bull-faced ashlar quoins and window dressings, and a rubble base at the rear. The house has coped stacks with assorted clay cans and has recently been re-slated with graded grey slate.
