Description

This former school building, dating to circa 1870, is a Gothic style structure with a bell cote and pointed arched windows. A 1963 addition is also present. It was built as part of village improvements initiated by local landowner David Carnegie, and is designed in a style consistent with the local church and Ardachaidh. The school and schoolhouse combine well architecturally and occupy a prominent position by the entrance to Balquhidder, forming a positive contribution to the streetscape.

Adjoining the school is a single storey and attic, 3-bay, L-plan schoolhouse villa with a lean-to addition to the rear. The front elevation features a central gabled timber porch, a canted bay window to the right, and a later door with sidelights to the left. Two gabled dormer windows are located on the upper floor, and the side and rear elevations have irregular window placement. The interior of the schoolhouse retains original features, including timber window shutters, a plain cornice and picture rail in the sitting room, a timber staircase, chimneypieces in the bedrooms, and timber panelled interior doors.

The school building itself is a single-room structure. The south gable features a tripartite pointed-arch window, while the west elevation has two shouldered, pointed-arch, gabled windows. The interior has a timber arch-braced ceiling supported on plain corbels. A large, out-of-character extension was added to the west elevation in 1963.

The buildings are constructed of coursed sandstone with a log-effect finish on the principal elevations, with ashlar quoins and window dressings. Local random rubble and quartz are used at the rear. Windows are timber sash and case with 3- and 6-pane glazing (schoolhouse) or timber framing (school). Yellow clay cans are visible on the coped stacks, and the roofing material is graded grey slate.

A random rubble boundary wall encloses the sides and rear, with a random rubble retaining wall alongside the road, incorporating steps and a cast-iron gate leading to the schoolhouse.
