Monaltrie Hotel, Bridge Square, Ballater

The Monaltrie Hotel, built around 1860, is a large two-storey and attic hotel prominently located in Bridge Square, Ballater. It features deep eaves and distinctive black painted decorative bargeboarding, along with unusually steeply pitched attic dormers. The exterior is finished in white painted harl with pink granite margins. The west elevation includes some hoodmoulds, a pink granite corniced entrance porch with a Tudor arched opening, and a blank heraldic panel above. Flanking the entrance are tripartite windows on the ground floor with timber mullions. There are also pink granite parapetted bay windows at the ground and basement levels on the west side, with a basement storey on the west and south elevations. An extension was added later on the east side.

The hotel predominantly features plate glass timber sash and case windows in various styles, and it is roofed with grey graded slates. There are gable and ridge stacks, along with cast iron rainwater goods.

Inside, the original room layout remains largely intact, although it has been modernised. Some fine decorative plasterwork can be found in the main public rooms, along with decorative Adam style chimneypieces.

The boundary wall consists of a low rubble coped wall with cast iron railings topped with decorative baluster heads on the west side.
