Description
Inverernan House is a classical reconstruction of a house originally built in 1764, with significant alterations and enlargement completed by G Bennet Mitchell of Aberdeen in 1935. The building, which is dated 1764, closely resembles Bellabeg House and features a central nepus gable and cherry caulking. It is a 2-storey structure with an attic that has been later expanded to 3-storeys, comprising five bays and overlooking a formal garden to the south. The front is made of red granite ashlar with cherry caulking, and includes coursed squared rubble with long and short quoins and ashlar margins. There is a voussoired round-headed nepus window.
The principal elevation is symmetrical, facing east, with a two-leaf timber door and a three-part fanlight beneath a dated coat of arms at the center. Flanking windows are present, with regular fenestration on the first floor and a finialled nepus gable that projects above the eaves at the center. To the north, there is a large three-storey canted bay, with outer gabled bays flanking a flat-roofed infill on the west side.
The windows feature 12-, 16-, and 18-pane glazing patterns in timber sash and case style. The roof is covered with graded grey slates, and there are coped ashlar stacks with cans, as well as ashlar-coped skews with block skewputts. Decorative cast iron downpipes with rainwater hoppers dated 1935 are also present.
Inside, the house boasts a good decorative scheme, including panelled and architraved doors, parquet flooring, deep skirting boards, and timber fire surrounds, some of which have cast iron grates. There is imported timberwork, a timber dog-leg staircase with decorative ironwork balusters, and a study featuring timber panelling and a timber fire surround with a carved frieze, dentilled cornice, and an overmantel with a mirror surmounted by a broken pediment that was installed in 1938. The dining room includes a marble fireplace and pedimented doorpieces, while the flower room, which was formerly a butler's pantry, features a timber sink.
