Description
The drinking fountain located at The Clachan in Balfron dates back to 1892. It features a circular plan and is constructed from grey granite, with a pink granite bowl. The fountain has a moulded base set on a square plinth, which is integrated into a wide circular concrete step. The shaft of the fountain is inscribed with a dedication: 'THIS FOUNTAIN TOGETHER WITH A MEMORIAL HEADSTONE HAS BEEN ERECTED IN GRATEFUL REMEMBRANCE OF THE LATE WILLIAM McCANDLISH F.R.C.S. BY 262 CONTRIBUTORIES TO WHOM AND THE PUBLIC GENERALLY IN THE EXERCISE OF HIS MEDICAL SERVICES HE ENDEARED HIMSELF AS A PERSONAL FRIEND. HE DIED AFTER A RESIDENCE OF 17 YEARS IN THIS PARISH, UPON THE 12th DAY OF APRIL 1892, AGED 48 YEARS'. The circular bowl is topped with a central post that has a moulded apex, although the end of the waterspout is missing.
