Description
The sundial at Ballindalloch, likely from the later 17th century, is an obelisk-style structure made of sandstone ashlar. It features a square-plan shaft topped with a polyhedron head and a tall obelisk finial, reaching approximately 2.5 meters in height. The base consists of two square-plan steps topped by a circular-plan step. The shaft is intricately carved to resemble four false courses, with various incised motifs on each side of each 'course', except for the north side, which has only one motif on the third 'course'. The motifs include circles, hearts, and diagonal lines, either separately or in combination. The eight-sided polyhedron has recessed arrises and a horizontal band that is incised on the outer planes and projects at the recesses. The obelisk finial is also carved into seven false courses, although the top one is damaged. The gnomons for both the polyhedron and the obelisk finial are missing.
