Description

Clachan House is a later 18th-century house, with a rear wing added in the early 20th century and alterations and remodelling in 1922. The original block is rectangular and has a symmetrical three-bay principal (south) elevation. A two-storey rear wing extends to the north. A canted entrance bay is centrally positioned on the principal elevation, containing a four-panel timber door within a moulded architrave, topped with a frieze, cornice, and a panel bearing the dates "J.R.D.1766.1922". Flanking windows are arranged on both the ground and first floors of the canted bay, with smaller windows on the first floor. Further windows are set back on either side of the main block, with flat-headed dormers inserted into the attic space. The exterior is harled with painted ashlar dressings, featuring a base course, eaves course, and architraved windows, except for the dormers, bay window, and windows in the canted bay to the south. Vertical margins are present at the arrises.

The west elevation features a flat-roofed polygonal bay window set into the gable end of the main block, with a first-floor window to the left return. To the left of this is a projecting, finialled bay, characteristic of the early 20th century wing, with bipartite windows on both floors and a narrow window to the left return; an entrance is located to the right. The east elevation has a ground floor window to the right of the original block’s gable, with a first floor window to the left. The early 20th century wing is set back to the right, with a single-storey window set forward.

The windows are predominantly timber sash and case windows with 2, 4, and 6 panes, with 12-pane casements in the dormers. The roofs are grey slate, with red ridge tiles to the canted bay. Coped gabled head stacks are located on either side of the main block and one to the rear wing. A shouldered coped wallhead stack is situated to the north of the main block; all stacks are topped with octagonal cans.

The interior appears to have been largely refurbished in the 1920s, featuring a winding stone staircase with turned timber balusters, and a finely panelled sitting room with a polygonal bay window, both dating from the same period.
