Norrieston Parish Church And Churchyard, Main Street, Thornhill

Norrieston Parish Church, built in 1878-9, is an Early English style building situated on Main Street, Thornhill. It comprises a nave with aisles and a south-east tower. The church is constructed of rubble with ashlar dressings and quoins. The main entrance features a central pointed moulded head with flanking single lights. Above the door are three lancet windows with hood moulds, a raised central light, and an oculus in the gable, surmounted by a gable-head cross. The south-east tower is square, with two stages and a broached stone facetted spire banded at the top, topped with a weather vane. The first stage has single, hood moulded lancet windows and angle buttresses. The second stage is set back, with paired louvred openings to the south and single openings on the other faces. The six-bay nave has simple lancet windows, while the five-bay aisles also feature lancet windows. A door is located in the south-west nave return, above which is a quatrefoil. A single, lower, gabled bay projects to the north-west. The roof is slate, with louvred gablets. The church forms a group value with its churchyard.
