1 The Hill, Thornhill

1 The Hill, Thornhill is a two-storey, three-bay house built around 1770, with a two-bay addition to the east added in the late 18th or early 19th century. In 2022, it was converted into two separate houses. The house is constructed from rubble with raised and painted margins, and has a pitched slate roof with rendered chimneystacks and scrolled skewputs. The plan is rectangular. The main north elevation is symmetrically arranged around a central door opening, which features a lugged architrave and projecting cornice. The two-bay block to the east (now No.1) has similar construction and detailing, distinguished by a piended gable. There is evidence that a window on the left side of this eastern block was formerly a doorway. A door opening on the east elevation has a stop-chamfered surround and raised margins. The exterior of both properties was formerly stuccoed with painted margins. A single-storey addition from the late 20th century extends from the rear (south) elevation of No.3. The statutory address was changed from 'Mrs. Thomson, Hillview, Thornhill' to '1-3 The Hill, Thornhill' and the listed building record was updated in 2022. Historic maps show the building surveyed between 1862 and 1863, and again in 1898, with a National Grid Map revision in 1970.
