Chalmers Church, Henderson Street, Bridge Of Allan

Chalmers Church, located on Henderson Street in Bridge of Allan, was designed by J W & J H Hay from Liverpool and completed in 1856. This mid-pointed, cruciform church is built from rubble and features a south broach spire that rises to 108 feet. The structure has a low, broad three-bay nave with a steep roof, lower transepts, and an apse.

Notable architectural elements include an interesting treatment of the tower and spire, with massive diagonal buttresses that support a broad flight of steps leading to a door with two orders. The second stage of the tower features a three-light curvilinear window, while the third stage has triple lancets that are stepped in the broaches of the spire. The spire is adorned with two-light lucarnes and two tiers of smaller gablets above.

The south bays of the nave are fitted with tall two-light curvilinear windows raised in gablets, while the north two bays have depressed-arch two-light windows. The church is topped with slated roofs and is set back from the street, approached by an avenue, providing a fine setting for this striking building.
