Description

1, 2, 3 Calderwood Place are a pair of single-storey, three-bay cottages built in 1754. They have a rectangular plan and symmetrical gabled roofs. The cottages are constructed from red sandstone rubble with yellow tooled and squared margins around the openings. They feature overhanging eaves with exposed rafters.

For No. 1, the southeast elevation has a harled surface and regular window arrangement. There is a modern two-leaf timber door in the center, with a lintel above inscribed 'IW 1754 HW'. The flanking windows have projecting cills. The northwest rear elevation is a blank rubble wall, while the southwest side elevation has a low rubble outshot with a piended roof. The northeast side elevation is obscured by an adjacent building.

No. 2 has a similar southeast elevation with regular fenestration and a two-leaf timber panelled and glazed door in the center. The northwest rear elevation is also a blank rubble wall. The southwest and northeast side elevations are obscured by an abutting building.

Both cottages feature 8-pane timber-framed sash and case windows, grey slate roofs with lead flashing, and cast-iron rainwater goods with coped stacks. The interiors of No. 1 were not seen in 2001, while No. 2 consists of small, plain, renovated apartments.
