Description
This is a K6 telephone kiosk designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott in 1935, and produced from 1936 to 1968. The kiosk is a standard K6 design, characterized by three sides of lying-pane glazing set within a frame of 8 sections, with narrow margin lights. One glazed side features a cup handle aligned with the fourth and fifth panes, functioning as the door. The rear is a blind cast-iron panel housing the telephone and a shelf. Rectangular opal glass panels display "TELEPHONE" in black lettering on each side, accompanied by a vent below. The kiosk is topped with a central embossed crown which rises into four segmental-headed pediments culminating in a saucer dome. Constructed from cast-iron and painted red, it is prominently situated at the entrance to Lamington village on the A702 road.
The K6, also known as the Jubilee Kiosk, commemorates the Silver Jubilee of King George V and was part of a GPO initiative to provide a kiosk for each village with a Post Office. Scott’s design, approved by the Royal Fine Art Commission, evolved from his earlier 1924 K2 kiosk. While retaining the Soanian dome and curved corners for structural integrity in the bolted cast-iron panels, the design incorporated modernist features, notably the repositioning of the glazing bars to create a broad central window with narrow margin lights, improving visibility. The K6 remained in production until 1968 and stands 8 feet 3 inches tall. Its red colour was chosen in 1924 to ensure visibility and project an official character.
