Description

Hunter House, located on Maxwellton Road in East Kilbride, is an early 18th century dwelling with early 19th century alterations. It is a two-storey, three-bay house that was converted into a museum in 1996. The main structure is finished in painted harl with raised margins, while a single storey and attic range to the west is constructed of squared and snecked rubble.

The south elevation features a central timber porch with single windows on either side and regular fenestration above. A plaque detailing the history of the house is positioned between the first and second bays on the first floor. The west elevation includes the adjoining range, which has three single windows on the right and a blind window on the left, along with a single window in the gablehead of the left return.

The north elevation has a central tympany gable with a blind oculus and an irregular pattern of fenestration. There is a double gable extension to the range, with a modern door and windows on the right gable and modern windows on the returns, as well as skylight windows. The east elevation has a single window in the left bay at ground level and another in the right bay on the first floor.

The principal elevation features 12-pane sash and case windows, while the rear elevation has a mix of 12-pane and 2-pane sash and case windows. The roof is slate, with crowstepped skews and straight skews on the tympany gable, along with coped rubble stacks at the gableheads.

Inside, the house has been converted into a museum, with the original layout altered to create exhibition spaces, video rooms, and offices.

The property also includes gatepiers and a boundary wall, consisting of a pair of stone piers with chamfered plinths, panelled shafts, and pyramidal corniced caps, along with a low rubble wall.
