Description

Cambuslang Old Parish Church, located on Cairns Road in Cambuslang, Glasgow, was designed by David Cousin of Edinburgh and built between 1839 and 1841. This rectangular church features a square tower centrally positioned on the east gables and showcases a transitional architectural style with round-headed openings, predominantly tall lights, inset shafts with scalloped capitals, plaster strips, and pinnacles. The tower includes a door at its base, a clock, and belfry stages above the main roofline, topped by a lucarned tall spire. A stone dated 1626 has been re-set within the structure, and block corbels are present at the eaves and parapets. The church has four-bay flanks, and the chancel, designed by Peter MacGregor Chalmers, was added between 1919 and 1922, although it was originally designed in 1913.

The exterior is finished in stugged ashlar with polished dressings and slate roofs. Inside, the church boasts an impressive vaulted interior and a curved gallery supported by cast-iron columns. The leaded windows, tapestries, and altar cross were created by Sadie MacLellan. The church also houses a bell from 1612, installed by MIH (for John Houston) and CH (possibly for Charles Hogg, a bell-founder from Edinburgh), along with a war memorial by MacGregor Chalmers from 1921.

The churchyard is enclosed by rubble-built walls and modern iron railings, featuring gatepiers with intersecting arcading and cast-iron gates. The site contains stone monuments, primarily 19th-century headstones, many of which have suffered vandalism.
