Description

The Clydesdale Hotel, located at 13-15 Bloomgate in Lanark, dates from around 1790, with an addition made in the early 19th century to the east. The original building is two storeys high with an attic and features three bays. It is constructed of stucco with a black painted plinth, window, and angle margins. The central door is set within a projecting porch that consists of four Roman Doric columns and two pilasters, which support an entablature and blocking course. There is later infill between the columns, and the building has flanking tripartite windows with narrow outer lights. The first floor has quadrapartite windows flanking a single light central window. There are two later canted and gabled dormers, a cornice at the eaves, straight skews to the west, end stacks, and a slate roof.

The eastern addition is also two storeys high with an attic and features three windows, projecting towards the street. It is made of stucco with painted flush margins, has a cornice, and includes two later canted and gabled dormers, straight skews, end stacks, and a slate roof.

At the rear, there is an Assembly Room built between 1828 and 1829, which is two storeys tall and constructed of rubble with ashlar quoins and droved dressings. The ground floor and margins are painted. The first floor hall has four large sash windows, and there is an altered entrance at the ground level. The roof is piended and covered with slate.

Inside, the hotel features a square coffered ceiling and a gallery at the north end, which has an iron balustrade supported on two pilasters.
