Description
The George Hotel, located at 39 High Street, dates from around 1810 and has undergone later alterations. The building features engraved stucco, with a rusticated ground storey. It stands two storeys high with gables and has slightly projecting gabled bays on either side, each containing one window. The central section has three windows, which are later casements set in moulded architraves, with two in the centre that break above the eaves. The gables have a sham timber frame design and plain barge-boards. The late 19th-century inn front includes a pilaster doorcase with a semi-circular head, a plain fanlight, an arched pediment, and a five-panelled door. Inside, the hotel retains its original plain staircase. The building is included for its group value.
