Description
This mid-19th century building at 81 Ayr Road consists of a pair of two-storey, three-bay cottages designed in the Queen Anne style. The cottages feature prominent pedimented dormer heads that break the eaves above the first-floor windows. They are constructed from squared and snecked sandstone with ashlar dressings and have a base course. The ground floor has stone mullioned bipartite windows, although the mullions have been removed from No. 81 to create shop windows. The inner bays on the first floor retain their mullioned bipartite windows, while the outer bays have single windows. Each cottage has a central two-leaf timber-boarded door framed by a roll-moulded architrave, with a small rectangular fanlight above the lintel.
The windows predominantly feature four-pane glazing in timber sash and case style, with shop windows at No. 81 displaying multi-pane upper sashes and plate glass lower sashes. The roofs are covered with grey slate, and there are corniced gable and ridge stacks topped with clay cans.
Inside No. 81, there are modern shop fittings, but some original timber work remains in the other ground floor rooms.
