Description

This is a pair of cottages located on High Street, Queenborough, dating to the early 19th century, with alterations made in the mid-19th century. The front of the cottages is weather-boarded over stud framing, with a roof partly of original clay peg tiles and partly renewed with asbestos slates. A central brick chimneystack rises from the roof. The cottages are two storeys and have attics, with two windows visible from the front. A pentice juts out from No. 163. There is likely a mid-19th century gable at the rear of No. 161. There are two flat-roofed dormers, one with a casement window and one with a mid-19th century sash window featuring only vertical glazing bars. No. 161 has a first-floor sash window with vertical glazing bars and horns, set within an original moulded architrave, and a mid to late 19th century shopfront with a wide sloping fascia under a hood with brackets. The right-hand doorcase has a replaced door but retains an original wooden dentilled cornice above. No. 161 also has an original 16-pane sash window on the first floor in a moulded architrave, and a ground floor sash window, of which four lower glazing bars have been removed. The left-hand doorcase retains a wooden dentilled cornice and a four-panelled door. A wooden plinth runs along the base. The rear gable has mainly mid-19th century sash windows. Inside, both properties retain early 19th century fireplaces, one with a good cast iron duck’s nest grate and a panelled wooden surround, and others with panelled surrounds. Internal features include wooden panelled partition walls, four-panelled doors, some two-panelled cupboard fronts with HL hinges, and winder staircases.
