Description

Toxide Farm Cottages are mid-19th century single-storey and attic cottages, consisting of a six-bay pair. They are constructed from tooled, squared, and snecked pink sandstone, featuring droved and polished dressings. The northeast elevation has an eaves course, raised margins, chamfered reveals, vertical quoins, crowstepped gables, and dormers.

The northeast (principal) elevation is nearly symmetrical, with a timber door in the left central bay at ground floor, accompanied by a two-pane fanlight. To the right central bay, there is a window that was originally a doorway. There are additional windows in the penultimate bays on both sides, with a timber door featuring a glazed panel and letterbox fanlight to the right. Gabled dormers break the eaves in the penultimate bays on both sides. The outer left and right bays are advanced, displaying regular fenestration on both ground and attic floors.

The northwest elevation is asymmetrical and consists of two bays. It features a bipartite window off-centre to the right of the left bay, and a harled recessed bay to the right, which includes a lean-to structure with a boarded timber door at the centre of the ground floor.

The southwest elevation is symmetrical with twin gables and comprises four bays. It is harled, with regular fenestration on the ground floor and a bipartite window set in each gablehead.

The southeast elevation is asymmetrical and consists of two bays, featuring a timber door with a letterbox fanlight to the left and a window to the right of the right bay, along with a recessed harled bay to the left.

The cottages predominantly have eight-pane timber sash and case windows, a grey slate roof with lead ridges, and coped ashlar ridge stacks with circular cans. The rainwater goods are made of cast iron. The interior was not seen in 1998.
