Description
These cottages, built in the mid-19th century, are a symmetrical pair of single-storey homes with an attic, featuring five bays and gabled roofs. The central section has an advanced gabled porch, and there is a full-width single-storey lean-to addition at the rear. The exterior is finished in whitewashed harl with sandstone ashlar dressings, including a raised base course, sandstone quoin strips, chamfered sandstone margins, and projecting cills on the sides.
On the southwest (entrance) elevation, there is a stone-mullioned bipartite window in the central gabled bay, which also has a stone bracketed pentice canopy and a round-arched niche at the gablehead. The other bays have single windows at ground level that are recessed to the left and right, with gabled dormers breaking the eaves above.
The northwest (side) elevation features a single window at ground level offset to the right of centre and a single window centred on the upper floor. The timber door in the porch is recessed to the outer right, and there is a single window in the lean-to addition to the outer left.
On the northeast (rear) elevation, the full-width lean-to projection has regularly spaced windows and part-glazed boarded timber doors. The southeast (side) elevation mirrors the northwest side, with a single window at ground level offset to the left of centre and a single window centred on the upper floor. The timber door in the porch is recessed to the outer left, and there is a single window in the lean-to addition to the outer right.
The cottages predominantly feature 8-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows, with small rooflights at the rear. The roof is covered in grey slate with sandstone ridging, and there are bracketed skewputts on the main block and dormers. Iron rainwater goods are present, along with sandstone coping on the whitewashed ridge stacks flanking the centre, which have circular terracotta cans.
The interiors were not seen in 1998.
