Description

Western Cottage in Kames is a pair of single-storey cottages with an attic, built in the early 20th century, possibly by Harry Ramsay Taylor, with later additions and alterations. The cottages form a symmetrical 6-bay block and feature a lean-to addition at the rear. They are finished in whitewashed harl with painted margins and have overhanging timber bracketed eaves. The windows have painted sandstone mullions and projecting cills.

On the southwest (entrance) elevation, there are boarded timber doors in the penultimate bays on the outer left and right, each with 2-pane fanlights and gabled canopies above. The outer bays also feature Venetian windows at ground level, while the central bays have bipartite windows. Above, there are gabled bipartite windows that break the eaves.

The northwest (side) elevation has a gabled design with a single window in the left bay at ground level and single windows in both bays above. There is a single-storey lean-to addition that is recessed to the outer left.

The northeast (rear) elevation is 10-bay wide, with boarded timber doors and single windows in a near full-width lean-to projection. There are also single windows in timber-clad box dormers offset to the right and left of the center.

The southwest (side) elevation features a gabled design with a lean-to greenhouse in the left bay at ground level and a single window in the right bay. Above, there are single windows in both bays, with a single-storey lean-to addition recessed to the outer right.

The cottages predominantly have 8-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows, a grey slate roof, and iron rainwater goods. The ridge and apex stacks are coped and whitewashed, with circular terracotta cans. The interiors were not seen in 1998.
