Description

This is an early to mid-19th century threshing barn, a single-story building with an attic, situated southwest of West Printonan Farmhouse. It is a rectangular structure with six bays. Attached to it is a later 19th-century cartshed and granary, also rectangular in plan with six bays, and a single-story wing of three bays set to the southeast of the barn.

The threshing barn is built of harl-pointed rubble with cream sandstone dressings. It has tooled sandstone quoins and dressed surrounds to the openings. A wheel is positioned at the rear. The northwest elevation (the entrance side) features a boarded timber door in the outer left bay, with a bracketed pulley wheel above, and a small boarded opening on the ground floor in the bay to the right. A two-leaf boarded timber door is set off-center to the right, with a single window to the right of that. A gabled opening breaks the eaves in the following bay to the right, and another single window is in the outer right bay. The northeast side is blank, showing evidence of a previous adjoining structure. A wheel is set off-center on the southeast (rear) elevation, next to a boarded timber door in the right bay. Rubble additions are visible in the left bay here. The southwest side is blank, with small flush rooflights punctuating the roof. The roof is of grey slate, with stone coped skews and iron rainwater goods. Inside, the barn contains a boarded timber threshing machine spanning both floors and retaining belts, wheels, and corn shutes. A narrow stair provides access to the upper floor, where boarded timber floors and open timber ceilings are present.

The cartshed and granary are constructed of harl-pointed rubble, with extensive harling on the rear elevation and a harled elevation to the east. They have cream sandstone dressings, tooled quoins, dressed surrounds to the openings, and sandstone voussoirs on the stop-chamfered, segmental-arched cart openings. Projecting cills are visible at the first floor level. The north elevation (entrance) has a square-headed, boarded timber door in the outer left bay. Segmental-arched cart openings are in the remaining five bays to the right, with a two-leaf boarded timber door in the outer right bay; single windows are positioned above the arches. A single-story wing is attached to the right with a single window in the center and boarded timber doors in the flanking bays. A single window is centered on the first floor of the east side elevation. The rear (south) elevation has a single window at ground level in the outer left bay and five single windows on the first floor. The single-story range attached to the left has a blind elevation. The west side has a blind elevation to the single-story projection and a recessed window in the granary above. Predominantly broken windows, with lower 2-pane and upper 3-pane glazing, are present, along with small rooflights. The roof is of grey slate with stone coped skews and iron rainwater goods. The interior of the cartshed and granary was not inspected in 1998.
