Description

West Printonan is a house built in the earlier to mid 19th century, with later additions and alterations. It is a two-storey, three-bay rectangular-plan house that features a lower two-storey wing at the rear and a single-storey wing beyond. There is a lean-to porch on the southwest side and a modern greenhouse on the northeast. The front is constructed of rubble whinstone with cream sandstone dressings, while the rear and sides are made of heavily-pointed rubble, partially rendered on the northeast. The building has droved quoins and droved long and short surrounds to the openings, with relieving arches at the ground level. The crowstepped gables and dormerheads are present above the first-floor windows, and there are projecting cills throughout.

On the southeast (entrance) elevation, steps lead up to a boarded timber door that is centered at the ground level, which features a fanlight with crossed astragals. There are single windows in the flanking bays at ground level, and gabled dormerheads above the first-floor windows in all bays.

The southwest (side) elevation is a blind elevation of the original house. The lower wing is recessed to the left and has single windows centered on both floors, with a plain gable above the upper window that breaks the eaves. There is a single-storey wing on the outer left with a projecting lean-to porch offset to the right.

The northwest (rear) elevation has gabled single and two-storey wings projecting at the center. The northeast (side) elevation features the original house with a single window at the first floor in the bay to the left, and a lean-to greenhouse attached at ground level to the right. The lower wing is recessed to the right, with single windows at both floors in the bay to the left and a single window at ground level to the right. There is also a single window in the single-storey wing on the outer right.

The windows are timber sash and case with 12-pane glazing. The roof is covered with grey slate and features crowstepped skews and moulded skewputts, along with corniced sandstone apex stacks and circular cans.

The interior was not seen in 1998. There is an ancillary structure, a single-storey, mono-pitched range to the northwest, which is part harl-pointed rubble and part dry-dashed, with boarded timber doors and two single windows to the right. The interior of this structure was also not seen in 1998.

The garden is partially enclosed by coped rubble walls that form a near rectangular-plan front garden.
