Description

Kames is a 17th-century mansion house with substantial later additions and alterations, including early 20th-century work by Harry Ramsay Taylor. Originally near a U-plan configuration, the house now comprises a symmetrical 9-bay, crowstepped and turreted block on the left, a 2-storey wing adjoined to the right (which has been raised and altered), and various additions at the rear. The exterior is whitewashed harl with painted ashlar dressings. Features include moulded eaves, giant order square-plan angle pilasters with corniced and finialled caps, painted margins, and flush cills.

The principal, southeast elevation displays a symmetrical 9-bay block to the left, with a recessed 5-bay range at the centre containing a 2-leaf, part-glazed timber front door. A carved armorial panel is positioned off-centre to the right on the first floor, and an ogee-capped dormer breaks the eaves above. Single windows are arranged in the remaining bays on both floors. Projecting crowstepped wings flank the left and right sides of the symmetrical block, each featuring giant order angle pilasters and single windows at all floors. Conical-capped corner turrets, with part-glazed timber doors at ground level, are located at the outer left and right corners, while small attic lights are set beneath the eaves. A 2-storey, 4-bay wing is adjoined to the right, with single windows in all bays on both floors; a giant order angle pilaster is present on the right side, while the taller blocks are recessed to the outer right.

The southwest elevation exhibits a 2-bay crowstepped block at the centre with single windows on all floors. Further to the right, a single window is at ground level, followed by single windows at ground and first floors, and a conical-capped corner turret on the outer right. A regularly fenestrated, single-storey, 3-bay range is adjoined to the outer left.

The rear, northwest elevation is irregularly fenestrated, consisting of a 10-bay, 2-storey block with an attic. A single-bay, flat-roofed projection is set off-centre to the right, while a single-storey, 2-bay crowstepped wing projects to the outer right. A separate, single-storey, crowstepped garage block sits to the northeast.

The northeast elevation includes an irregularly fenestrated crowstepped block on the right and a single-storey, lean-to addition to a lower wing recessed to the left. Another lean-to addition is present on a lower, gabled wing to the outer left. A screen wall connects the separate garage block to the outer right.

Most windows have 12-pane glazing in timber sash and case frames. The roof is covered in grey slate, with crowstepped skews, beak skewputts, and iron rainwater goods. Circular terracotta cans top the corniced ridge and apex stacks. Solar panels are located on the front.

The interior has been recast, with ground floor reception rooms featuring plain plasterwork, some dado rails and panelling, timber panelled doors, and fireplaces. A later drawing room has been raised at the rear and is accessible via a small, swept stair. Service quarters are located to the east, including a service stair. The main dogleg staircase incorporates timber treads, barley-twist timber uprights, ball-finialled, panelled newels, and timber handrails. First-floor bedrooms feature plain plasterwork, timber panelled doors, and fireplaces. A cobbled courtyard is situated at the rear.
