Description

7, 9, and 11 Gateside Street in Hamilton is a pair of nearly identical three-storey tenements built in 1894 by Gavin Paterson. These buildings feature a classical design and have shops on the ground floor. The front is made of red sandstone ashlar, with a concrete tile roof for numbers 7 to 11 and a slate roof for numbers 13 to 17.

The ground floor cornice includes two segmental door pediments and a moulded cill course at the first and second floors. The wallhead is corniced, and there are two segmental doorheads supported by fluted Ionic pilaster-type brackets. The windows are single and bipartite with architraves, featuring segmental and triangular pedimented heads with a pulvinated frieze at the first floor. Each block has a single window in the center at the second floor, set within pilastered panels that have wallhead pedimented and corniced stacks. Originally, the windows had plate glass sash and case frames, but most have been replaced with uPVC, which is not in keeping with the original character. The skews are flat-coped, and there are corniced end and ridge stacks.

On the front elevation, there is a door to the close at the left of numbers 7 to 11 and at the center of numbers 13 to 17. The ground floor features modern shopfronts, with a single window at the center flanked by bipartite windows at the first and second floors of each block. The interior has not been seen.
