Description

The Hamilton Central Co-Operative Society Limited, located at 10-14 Gateside Street in Hamilton, features an inscribed stone that reads "Hamilton Central Co-operative/1898." The building is likely not a single construction but a large, mainly three-storey gushet block designed in a Renaissance style. It is constructed of red ashlar and has mainly single or bipartite sash windows, with modern shops occupying the ground floor.

The north-facing side includes a shaped-gabled narrow gushet bay topped with a pair of turrets that are corbelled above the ground level, extending above the eaves and finished with conical roofs. The long elevation along Gateside Street is arranged in several blocks with varied rooflines and end stacks. The three-bay range nearest to the south features outer first-floor oriel windows, while the long range alongside has a continuous series of panels between the upper floors. The three southernmost bays are carried a storey higher and topped with a finialed steep roof. The remainder of the block includes either a pediment or cornice over most windows, which are primarily small-paned upper sashes, along with some shaped wall-head gables. A wall-head balustrade is present nearest the gushet, and the roofs are slated.
