Description

Kirkhouse, located on Carwood Road in Biggar, is a red sandstone villa built between 1896 and 1897, designed by architect John L Murray with elevations by draughtsman John Keppie, likely influenced by C R Mackintosh. The villa is two stories tall and features three bays, along with a single-storey service wing and stable court at the rear. The exterior is constructed with snecked bull-faced coursers and polished ashlar dressings, topped with a platform slate roof that is piended to the service wing.

The windows are sash and case style, with two panes on the bottom and eight panes on the top. The front elevation includes canted windows with stepped parapets and ball-finials, while the side features corniced windows. Additional architectural details include a dentilled eaves course and cast-iron rainwater goods with large moulded hoppers, along with four corniced stacks at the junctions of the piend and platform roofs.

The front elevation showcases a central two-leaf panelled door framed by a marbled and banded doorcase, supported by Doric columns and topped with an open pediment. Flanking the door are canted windows, with three additional windows on the first floor. The right return elevation consists of a single and a canted window on the ground floor to the right, and two windows on the first floor.
