Description

This is a 19th-century corn mill complex located on Biggar Mill Road, Biggar, comprising the main mill building, an adjoining kiln, a threshing barn, and a detached miller’s house. The buildings are constructed of rubble with contrasting yellow ashlar dressings, most of which are dorved, and have slate roofs, with the exception of a modern brick outbuilding.

The main mill building is a three-story structure with a piend roof and a symmetrical three-bay east front elevation. A mill wheel is located on the long west wall; a lade approaches from the north, and the area in front of the wheel is covered by a loft which links the kiln range to the west and is integrated into the main roof. The building appears to have been free-standing when originally built, likely in the first quarter of the 19th century, and was initially two stories high. A central first-floor loft doorway appears to have originally been a window, similar to the others on that elevation; all windows now have four-pane glazing. The mill wheel has lost its spokes and buckets, but the shaft remains. Inside, there are two pairs of millstones (the upper stone has been removed from each). The first floor contains a grain bruiser, while the ground floor features complex gearing, power shafts, and sack hoists.

The kiln range is located to the west and extends over two levels, with an outshot on the south flank, possibly covering a fire box. A loft entrance is in the west gable, at roadway level, exploiting the slope of the site, with blocked openings and timber flooring overlaying the kiln mouth.

The threshing barn was added between 1859 and 1897, as indicated by Ordnance Survey maps. It is a two-story, three-bay structure, with its front wall aligned with the original mill building. Droved quoins from the original building are used as a door jamb, while corresponding quoins, originally extending to the eaves level, have been removed and integrated into the walling. A later, less tightly-placed door is set at an angle to maintain symmetry. The ground floor features a single window, while a boarded loft opening is above, flanked by single slit ventilators, with ashlar stones appearing to be re-used from an earlier building. There is brick patching at the eaves.

The miller’s house, situated to the east of the mill, is a single-story, south-facing, three-bay cottage, also built between 1859 and 1897. It has been altered, with the original windows being doubled to create bipartite windows (though reusing original dressings), the addition of a pair of large rooflights, and a single-bay extension on the west gable. The windows are plate glass sashes, and there are end stacks.

The mill is said to have ceased operating in the 1930s.
