Description
The Priory, located at 4 Carlisle Road in Hamilton, was built in 1853 and is designed in the Scottish Baronial style. This two-storey building has an asymmetrical L-plan layout, with the front elevation painted and lined out to resemble ashlar stonework. The north elevation features a crowstepped gable on the left with tripartite windows, a central door framed by a plain architrave and cornice, and a bipartite window above it on the first floor. The left side includes tripartite windows and a first-floor bipartite window with a crowstepped gablet on the right.
To the left, there is a single-storey wing that is set back and has a modern window. The sides and rear of the building are finished with stugged coursers. A tall arched stair window is located at the centre of the rear, with a bipartite window beneath a crowstepped gable on the left and another bipartite window on the right. The building features raised margins and crowsteps, topped with a slated roof, and has corniced ashlar chimney stacks along with original glazing.
Inside, there is delicate plasterwork. The property is also accompanied by a coursed garden wall that includes an entrance hemicycle formed by four piers. The outer pair of piers are square and stop-chamfered, while the inner pair are octagonal, adorned with delicate ironwork that has been partly remodelled.
