Description
Braehead, located at 42 Ayr Road, is a tall two-storey, three-bay house built in 1883, showcasing a 17th century Scots revival style. It stands on a prominent corner site and features crowstepped gables, a forward-facing gable, and a gabled dormer that breaks the eaves on the main elevation. The exterior is constructed from squared, snecked sandstone with ashlar dressings, and includes a base course and eaves course with chamfered window margins.
On the southeast (principal) elevation, there is a central timber panelled door set within a roll-moulded architrave that has bracketed corners. Above the door is a dated lintel with a three-light deep-set fanlight and a dentilled cornice. Close to the eaves, there is a horizontal tripartite window, and the outer bays feature paired windows under relieving arches. The first floor has a central tripartite window flanked by single lights. A rose finial adorns the crowstepped gable of the left bay. The northwest (rear) elevation closely mirrors the southeast, with a single-storey piended porch at the centre.
The house predominantly features six-pane over two-pane glazing in timber sash and case windows, although some windows have been replaced with uPVC. The roof is covered with rosemary tiles, with some replacement tiles present. The prominent gablehead stacks are corniced and include some red clay cans.
The interior was not seen during the last inspection in 2007.
