Customs House, 2 Fort Street, Ayr

The Customs House, located at 2 Fort Street in Ayr, is an early 19th-century, two-storey and attic building that features a double-bow front. Constructed from sandstone ashlar with rubble on the sides and rear, it has a base course, cill courses on the ground and first floors, a central band course, a cornice, and a blocking course. The building has tripartite windows in the bowed bays.

On the northwest (entrance) elevation, there is a step leading to a central entrance with a two-leaf timber door and a letterbox fanlight above. A blind window is aligned above on the first floor, with regular fenestration in the flanking bowed bays on both the ground and first floors, although the inner sections of the ground floor windows are blind. The attic features canted dormers on the outer right and left sides.

The southwest (side) elevation has a blank gable. The building includes plate glass and 12-pane timber sash and case windows, a grey slate roof with a rooflight, stone skews, and brick gablehead stacks with circular and polygonal cans.

The interior was not seen in 1998. There is a low coped boundary wall enclosing the site on the northwest elevation and a higher stepped boundary wall on the southeast elevation.
